Free crochet beanie patterns for beginners are my favorite answer to shop hats that don’t fit. I always say I don’t have a hat head, because store bought hats are usually too small for me. With crochet you pick the size, the yarn and the color, and you end up with a hat that really fits.
The catch? Lots of beginner hat patterns call themselves easy, then throw three new stitches at you before round 3. So I went looking for hats a new crocheter can really start and finish, and if a hat has one new stitch, I tell you right away.
I found 33 of them and sorted them by how they’re made. Flat hats skip the magic ring, top down hats let you try them on as you go, and bottom up hats start with the brim. After those come chunky hats you can finish in one evening, plus striped and textured ones for when plain hats start to feel boring.
Number 33 is my own Ombre Moss Stitch Beanie, free here on the blog. Three soft colors fade into each other, and you still only need basic stitches.

Before you start your first crochet beanie
Five minutes now can save you a whole evening of ripping out rounds. So before you pick a hat, run through these quick checks.
Flat, top down or bottom up?
Every hat on this list is built in one of three ways. Flat hats are a rectangle you sew into a tube, top down hats start with a magic ring at the crown, and bottom up hats start with the brim.
Does the magic ring make you nervous? My magic ring tutorial will fix that in a few minutes.
After the ring, the top of a top down hat is a flat circle. Too few stitches turn it into a cone, and too many make it wavy. My guide on how to crochet a circle shows you how to keep it flat.
The stitches you need
Good news, you only need a few stitches. Most hats here use just single crochet, half double crochet or double crochet. If one of them still feels shaky, make a small swatch first.
Totally new to all of them? Start with my guide to beginning crochet stitches.
Picking your yarn
Now the fun part, yarn shopping! Pick a light, solid color in worsted or bulky weight. Dark, fuzzy yarn hides your stitches, so you can’t see where the hook should go.
Bulky yarn has a bonus too. Fewer rounds mean you’re wearing your new hat sooner.
Getting the right fit
Grab a measuring tape and measure your head before your first stitch. Your beanie should come out a bit smaller than your head, because crochet stretches as you wear it.
Working in rounds? Put a stitch marker in the first stitch, and you won’t lose count again.
Brims and seams
Last stop, the brim. Many hats here have ribbing, and my tutorial on how to crochet ribbing shows three easy ways to make it. Some brims use slip stitch in the back loop instead.

Making a flat hat? My mattress stitch tutorial gives you a seam nobody will ever find. Then you run the yarn tail through the top edge and pull it tight to close the hat.

Easy crochet hat patterns for beginners (no magic ring)
Does the magic ring still give you the shivers? Then start right here. Every hat in this section begins as a flat rectangle worked in rows, so you just sew it into a tube and pull the top closed.
1. Easiest Crochet Beanie by Sarah Maker

One stitch, and you get a hat that looks knitted. I love how back loop hdc turns plain rows into ribs all by itself, and in bulky yarn this easy crochet beanie grows really fast.
Sizes go from newborn to adult large. Once yours is done, you can make one for everybody at home.
2. Easy Crochet Beanie by Daisy Farm Crafts

Slip stitch ribbing scares lots of beginners, and this pattern makes it so simple. You need only back loop slip stitch and back loop single crochet, plus one skein of yarn.
Do you learn best by watching? The video walks you through every tricky part, so make this one first.
3. Beginner Crochet Pom Pom Hat by Daisy Farm Crafts

Pom pom lovers, this one is for you! Hdc in the front bottom loop gives a plain rectangle a ridged texture, and the folded brim makes it look neat and finished.
I also love that you choose the fit. Keep it snug, or add a few chains for a little slouch.
4. Crochet Beginner Winter Hats by Daisy Farm Crafts

Love texture but hate learning ten new stitches? Each row here gets a tiny braid from hdc and one back loop half double slip stitch, and that’s all.
Make it your second hat, once chains and single crochet feel easy. The photos and the video show the new stitch step by step.
5. Done in One Beanie by A Crocheted Simplicity

A knit look in about an hour with super bulky yarn? Count me in! Slip stitches in one loop give this beanie its garter stitch texture, and you work it flat and sideways.
The short rows at the top may be new, but the video shows every step. Sizes go from baby to adult XL.
6. Ribbed Wonder Easy Crochet Hat by Crochet 365 Knit Too

Three stitches, one great hat. Chain, slip stitch and back loop hdc are all you need for this ribbed crochet beanie in bulky yarn.
And you get two looks from one pattern. Fold the cuff up for a classic beanie, or leave it down for a slouchy day.
7. Chunky Ribbed Slouch Hat by Persia Lou

Need a gift by the weekend? Bulky yarn and a big hook make this slouchy ribbed hat fly off the hook, and the fluffy pom pom makes it look store bought.
You work back loop hdc in rows, then fold, seam and gather it. Quick tip, row 1 has a small count mistake, so read the designer’s fix before you start.
8. Harper Beanie by Crochet Dreamz

Got a skein of variegated yarn and no plan for it? On this slouchy rectangle hat the colors run up and down instead of around, and I really love that twist.
It’s rows of double crochet and slip stitch, so it’s great if rounds still confuse you. Count your stitches on every row, and your edges stay straight.
Top down crochet hats worked in rounds
Here’s what I love most about top down hats. You can try them on as you go and stop when the length feels right. Every beanie in this section starts with a magic ring at the crown.
9. Easy Half Double Crochet Beanie by Hooked on Homemade Happiness

Ready for your first magic ring? This hat is an easy place to try it, because every stitch is hdc in a spiral with no joins and no seam.
The brim is my favorite part, since working into the third loop makes it look knitted. Six sizes and a video make it easy to make more than one.
10. Simple Half Double Crochet Basic Beanie by Oombawka Design

Clear numbers and zero guessing, that’s why Rhondda’s patterns are so easy to follow. This classic crochet beanie comes in 11 sizes from preemie to adult large.
There are even notes on extra rounds if you like more slouch. Learn this one, and you have a hat for every head in the house.
11. Spiral Front Loop Single Crochet Hat by Daisy Farm Crafts

Want texture without any new stitch? Single crochet in the front loop only makes a swirl that spirals up the hat all on its own.
Bulky yarn keeps it quick, and there’s no seam at all. It fits a women’s medium, and the video shows the magic loop if it’s new to you.
12. Caron Slouchy Crochet Beanie by Yarnspirations

Stripes without a single color change? Yes, please! One ball of Caron Cakes does all the work, and you just keep going round and round in hdc.
If one color bores you fast, this is your hat. The PDF is a free download with no sign up.
13. Simple Slouchy Crochet Hat for Beginners by Persia Lou

Slouchy hats go with everything, and this one is a gentle first try at double crochet in rounds. You start with a magic loop or a small chain ring and finish with a back loop single crochet brim.
I love the idea of sewing a ribbon tag onto the brim, so it looks like a shop hat. If it comes out too big, the designer suggests a smaller hook.
14. Salt of the Earth Men’s Crochet Beanie by Crochet 365 Knit Too

Looking for a men’s crochet hat with some style? This oatmeal beanie has a sharp ribbed brim and takes just one skein of worsted yarn.
You work hdc rounds from the top, then five rounds of post stitch ribbing. Post stitches may be new, but five rounds is a nice small dose of practice.
15. Crochet Folded Cuff Brim Beanie by Repeat Crafter Me

Double crochet all the way, so this hat grows fast and stays simple. Here’s the clever bit, you turn the work before the last few rounds, and the brim folds up neatly.
There’s a cute bunny appliqué too, which makes it a sweet gift for a kid. Skip the bunny and you have a plain hat for yourself.
16. Brandeis Beanie by A Box of Twine

Two hats in one, because this beanie is reversible! Back loop slip stitch and hdc rounds give it soft texture on both sides.
It comes in a women’s and a men’s size, so it’s an easy his and hers gift. Heads up, the BPdc note says front post by mistake, so work it around the back.
Bottom up crochet beanies that start with the brim
Love rounds but hate fiddly starts? These hats begin with the brim. You join it into a ring and crochet up toward the top.
17. Easy Crochet Hat for Beginners by Easy Crochet

Another way to skip the magic ring! Krista starts this hat with a ribbed band of back loop single crochet, then works double crochet rounds up to the top.
Pick it when you want a classic ribbed hat for a grown up. My invisible decrease tutorial makes the top extra neat.
18. Caron Beginner Crochet Hat by Yarnspirations

One skein, one hook, and you’re ready to go. The ribbing is worked flat and joined, then hdc decreases in the body give it a mock rib look.
My favorite detail? Leftover yarn becomes the pom pom, so nothing goes to waste, and the PDF is free with no email needed.
19. Jenna Beanie by Crochet Dreamz

That braided brim is why this hat made my list. Slip stitch ribbing gets a ridge that looks like a braid, then you work rounds of sc and dc with chain spaces in super bulky wool.
Sizes go from baby to adult large, so it’s a fun family project. The video helps a lot the first time.
20. Striped Hipster Slouchy Beanie by Whistle and Ivy

Two colors, a folded band and tons of slouch, this hat is made for a teen who loves stripes. You work the band flat and join it, then stripe rounds of sc, hdc and dc and close the top like a drawstring.
There are no fixed sizes. You simply add band rows until it fits your head.
Chunky crochet beanie patterns you can finish in one evening
Want a new hat by tomorrow morning? Thick yarn and a big hook mean fewer rounds, so these chunky crochet beanies are your fastest win. Start one after dinner and wear it the next day.
21. 30 Minute Easy Chunky Crochet Beanie by Persia Lou

Only got half an hour? This whole hat is seven rounds of double and single crochet on a giant hook, so you can finish it during one TV episode.
It comes out big and slouchy, and that huge pom pom steals the show. For a closer fit, the designer suggests going down a hook size.
22. Crochet Chunky Beanie by Nicki’s Homemade Crafts

Slouchy or snug, why choose? This flat top hat works both ways, loose or with the edge folded into a brim.
You work super bulky yarn in double crochet rounds, with sizes from preemie to adult. I love that the designer says sc, hdc or tr work too, so you can play.
23. Chunky Textured Two Tone Beanie by Stitch & Hustle

Two colors and a chunky textured stitch, and suddenly a simple beanie looks modern. You start with the band and work up, so you can check the fit as you go.
Bulky yarn makes it a quick weekend hat. It’s also a fun way to use up leftover skeins.
24. Herringbone Stitch Crochet Beanie by For The Frills

Those diagonal lines look knitted, but it’s all crochet. Herringbone stitch is just a small twist on single crochet, and in thick yarn it grows fast.
My favorite of my own hat designs, the Siri Herringbone Hat, uses this stitch too, so I had to add this beanie. Sizes go from kids to adults.
25. Chunky Suzette Stitch Beanie by MJ’s Off the Hook Designs

Got a gradient yarn you can’t stop staring at? This hat shows it off, and the Suzette stitch is only single and double crochet worked in pairs.
Two strands held together make it thick and warm. With a full video and sizes from babies to large adults, it’s an easy hat to gift.
Striped and textured crochet beanies
Made a plain hat already and want more? These beanies bring in stripes and fun stitch textures. They still use stitches you know, so the jump feels small.
26. Simple Striped Crochet Beanie by Hooked on Homemade Happiness

Sc and dc rounds take turns here, and the different heights make little ridges between the stripes. My favorite detail is that you carry the second color up the inside, so there are fewer ends to weave in.
Six sizes go from baby to large adult. Everyone at home can get a striped hat.
27. Spirited Stripes Beanie by Crochet 365 Knit Too

Swap in your team colors, and this is your new game day hat! The original has black and white stripes with a bright green ribbed brim, all in easy hdc rounds.
Watch out, the ch 2 counts differently in the brim than in the stripes, so read that part twice. Lots of color changes? My guide on how to join yarn ends keeps the inside tidy.
28. Crochet Striped Sports Team Beanie by Repeat Crafter Me

Stitch counts at the end of every round, I wish every pattern did that! You work a dc body with sc stripes in three colors, then add a ribbed brim right onto the hat.
Sizes go from newborn to teen and adult, so the whole team can match.
29. Alpine Stripe Beanie by Moogly

Want deep, bumpy texture that looks like hard work? Alpine stitch gives you exactly that, here in two color stripes, and the repeat is short and easy to remember.
If front post stitches are new to you, this is a friendly first try. Sizes go from teens to large adults.
30. Camel Stitch Crochet Beanie by Two Brothers Blankets

Camel stitch is only hdc worked into the third loop, but wow, those ridges! They wrap all the way around the hat.
Pick from three brims, ribbed, front post or a bonnet style with tassels, in toddler, child and adult sizes. A camel stitch video on the page makes the new stitch easy.
31. Striped Crochet Hat by Joy of Motion Crochet

Want stripes with a bit more texture? Back loop stitches make tiny ridges between the colors, so even simple stripes look special.
The double folded brim keeps your ears extra warm, and sizes go from toddlers to adults. If foundation single crochet is new to you, practice it once before you start.
32. Favorite Style’n Beanie by Mama In A Stitch

No round counting at all, how nice is that? You make a long chain, join it, and work moss stitch in a tube, then cinch the top.
Moss stitch looks neat in any color, and the slouchy shape is comfy for every day. Just check that your chain isn’t twisted when you join, because commenters say it happens easily.

Crochet beanie FAQ for beginners
What is the easiest crochet beanie for a beginner?
A flat rectangle hat in bulky yarn is the easiest crochet beanie for a beginner, hands down. You only work rows, sew one seam and pull the top closed, so there’s no magic ring to fight with. For a first pick, try the Easiest Crochet Beanie (#1) or the Ribbed Wonder (#6).
Do I need a magic ring to crochet a beanie?
Nope, you can skip it completely! Flat hats are worked in rows and sewn together, and bottom up hats start with the brim instead. Then one day, when you feel brave, my magic ring tutorial will get you started on top down hats in a few minutes.
How much yarn do I need for a crochet beanie?
Plan on about 200 to 290 yards for an adult beanie in worsted or bulky yarn, based on the patterns here that list their yarn amount. Big pom poms eat extra yarn, so check the materials list before you shop. And grab one more skein than you think, because running out on the last round is the worst.
What size should an adult beanie be?
Most adult heads are about 21 to 23 inches around, and your beanie should come out a little smaller than that. It sounds strange, but crochet fabric stretches, so a hat that matches your head exactly will slowly slide off. Measure first, then follow the size chart in your pattern.
Is it easier to crochet a hat top down or bottom up?
Top down usually feels easier, because you can try the hat on as you go and stop when it’s long enough. Bottom up hats skip the magic ring, but you only see the final length at the very end. If rounds still confuse you, flat hats are your easiest choice.
Can I make an easy crochet beanie in one day?
Yes, and a chunky beanie can be done in an hour or even less! Super bulky yarn and a big hook mean only a few rounds, so jump to the chunky section first. A worsted or DK hat has many more stitches, so give that one a few evenings instead.
Which beanie are you making first?
So, which hat caught your eye? Tell me in the comments which one you’re starting first. Stuck on a round? Drop your question there too.
Want to keep this list for later? Save it to your Pinterest board, so it’s right there when the first cold morning hits. And if a friend keeps saying she wants to learn crochet, send her this post.
