Crochet Square Pillow

After finishing my Carina Rectangle Blanket, I thought a matching Carina Square Pillow would be so cute, so I decided to design one!

The Carina Crochet Square Pillow is a great way to add a homemade touch to any room in your house. Warm and cozy, modern and elegant, this beautiful pillow is classy and functional.

The front of this crochet square pillow it’s worked in the round from the center out. The pattern features a mesmerizing mosaic crochet design around a central square. The reverse of the pillow is made in one colour and has a buttoned opening to tak the pillow pad in or out.

Once you get the hang of it, you can easily transform this crochet square pillow into a blanket.

How to crochet mosaic in the round

The eye-catching mosaic colorwork will make your crochet square pillow look profesionally made.

Mosaic crochet is an easy-to-master technique that creates stunning and modern projects using the simple stitches worked in a unique way. It uses two contrasting colors of yarn, working the single crochet stitches on each round in the dominant color and making chains where the stitches are in the contrast color. You work one round with a dominant color, and then it changes for the next one round.

Bamboo yarn

For this crochet square pillow I decided to use luscious Scheepjes Bamboo Soft yarn. This animal and eco-friendly yarn has a gentle lustre and works up beautifully. The addition of bamboo gives the yarn an extra-soft hand and an elegant shimmer.

Thanks to the blend of 50% bamboo and 50% cotton fibre, the Carina Crochet Square Pillow is silky soft, hypoallergenic and provides excellent thermoregulation. The projects made from bamboo are durable and biodegradable.

Scheepjes Bamboo soft has been created in a selection of 17 fabulous colours. I chose neutral colour with high contrast so the colour work in this pattern could really pop.

No matter what color combination you choose for your version of this crochet square pillow, it will add a splash of color and texture to any interior setting.

Materials & Tools:

  1. Yarn Scheepjes Bamboo Soft 50g = 150m, 50% Bamboo, 50% Cotton, in 2 different colours:

Yarn A: Rich Cream (265) – 1 skein

Yarn B: Antique Silver (264) – 4 skeins.

  • Hook  size 3.5mm. Adjust  hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge,
  • Tapestry needle (to weave and hide yarn ends),
  • Scissors,
  • 4 buttons (Approx. 2,8 cm)
  • Stitch markers.

Level:

Intermediate.

Size:

40cm x 40cm (15.75”x15,75”).

Gauge after blocking:

FRONT: after round 10 the pillow is 10cm (4”) wide.

BACK: 19 sts and 22.5 rows to 10 x 10cm (4 x 4”) using 3.5mm hook with single crochet.

If necessary, adjust hook size to obtain the correct gauge.

Before you measure, please take the time to block your swatch in the same manner that you will block your pillow.

General Notes:

  • The pattern uses US crochet terminology.
  • Pillow cover is worked in 3 separate pieces: FRONT, BACK TOP AND BACK BOTTOM. They are seamed together. The pillow cover does have a buttoned opening on the back to take the pillow pad in or out.
  • The FRONT of the pillow is worked in unturned rounds from the center out. Each round builds on the next, and each round starts in the corner chain space.
  • Both BACK BOTTOM and BACK TOP are worked in rows, back and forth.
  • Stitch marker placement: When instructed to place your marker, place on the last st worked unless otherwise instructed. It should lie on a stitch, not between stitches.
  • STITCHES: When in the instructions you have a stitch followed by a number, eg sc14, this means you have to work 1sc stitch into each of the next 14 sts. When in the instructions you have a number followed by a stitch, eg 2sc, this this means you have to work 2 sc stitches into the next (same) stitch.
  • Instructions in square brackets […] are worked as many times as indicated.
  • Instructions in *…* are worked as many times as indicated.

Mosaic Pattern Notes:

  • You can either follow the chart or written instructions.
  • Color is changed after every one round.
  • You can avoid weaving in all those ends by not cutting the yarn when you finish a round. Simply carry the other color along the inside and pick it back up with your hook when you need to use it again.

How to read the Mosaic Chart:

  • Chart is read from bottom to top and each row of squares represents a quarter of a round.
  • All rounds are read from right to left.
  • Each square of the chart represents 1 stitch or 1 skipped stitch.
  • Whenever you see a square of color dedicated to that round, work single crochet.
  • Whenever you see a square of different color in that round, skip that stitch (make chain). To prevent puckering,  make the same number of chain as the number of skipped sts plus ch1. For example, for 1 skipped st – make ch2, for 2 skipped sts – make ch3, for 3 skipped sts – make ch4, etc.
  • Pay special attention to number of skipped stitches.
  • BLmosaicdc will be worked in these skipped sts from one round below. Remember, BLmosaicdc are always worked in front of chains of previous round.

Stitches & Abbreviations (US terms):

ch(s) – chain(s) stitch

st(s) – stitch(es)

BOR – beginning of the row/round

sc(s) – single crochet

dc(s) – double crochet

BLsc – back loop only single crochet

BLslst – back loop only slip stitch

BLmosaicdc (back loop only mosaic double crochet) – work regular BLdc in unworked/skipped st of the same color two rounds below in front of chain space (in front of work). These chains will stay behind mosaicdc and will stay unworked.

Corner – BLsc1 in next ch, ch2, RPM, BLsc1 in next ch.
