The crochet blanket design

It’s been a year since I’ve released a crochet blanket pattern, but with the colder days ahead of us, I think you can never be to early to start crocheting blankets.

So today I am excited to introduce new and FREE mosaic crochet pattern called Thassos Mosaic Blanket .

Don’t be scared of mosaic design, the stitches used in this pattern are easy and if you know basics and you’ve worked stripes in two colors before, you are good to go with this crochet blanket.

Moreover, it will be a great opportunity to learn some new crochet technique that will let you create stylish and modern home decor.

Thassos Mosaic Blanket looks way more advanced than it is and can be made in any size according to your preferences.

With a bit of commitment you will create a gorgeous crochet blanket that catches the eye for yourself or unique gift for someone you love.

The pattern includes row by row written instructions and mosaic chart as well as a step-by-step photo tutorial.

Monochrome crochet blanket

If you’ve always wanted to try mosaic crochet colorwork, but you are anxious about choosing colors, a monochrome or two-color combination is a perfect solution.

While I was working up my Monochrome Bias Wrap, I knew I wanted to come up with black and white design for a crochet blanket pattern using my favourite crochet technique – mosaic colorwork.

I’m very pleased with the high contrast effect of the black on white pattern but you can use any two colors that you like.

It’s perfect for white, minimalistic interiors, but will also look lovely in many other decors. With different colors of yarn, this crochet blanket pattern would fit anyone’s style.

So choose your favourite colors and have fun crocheting them.

Two-rows mosaic crochet

Don’t be afraid of mosaic crochet – it’s easy, once you get the hang of it.

Each color is worked individually in pairs of rows and you’re only working one color at a time using only basic stitches in a way that creates vertical lines.

Since the yarn isn’t cut at the end of each color change, there are just a few ends to weave in. Yay!

I have included heavy step-by-step picture tutorial at the end of the pattern to show you how this colorwork works.

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about this my Thassos Mosaic Crochet Blanket, and that I’ve inspired you to try some new crochet technique as well! Please post photos of your projects!

Thassos Mosaic Crochet Blanket - free crochet pattern with step-by-step mosaic crochet tutorial on my blog mycrochetory.com

Materials & Tools:

  1. Yarn Gazzal Baby Cotton XL 50g = 105m, 50% cotton, 50% acrylic.

Yarn A: White (3432) – 10 balls,

Yarn B: Black (3433) – 8 balls.

Note that yardage may vary depending on yarn used, gauge variations or modifications.

  • Hook  size 4mm. Adjust  hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge,
  • Tapestry needle (to weave and hide yarn ends),
  • Scissors.

Level:

Intermediate.

Gauge:

15 sts and 19 rows to 10 x 10cm (4 x 4”) using 4mm hook with single crochet stitches.

If necessary, adjust hook size to obtain the correct gauge.

Size (adjustable):

94.7cm/37.2” wide x 107.5cm/42.3″ long.

General Notes:

  • The pattern uses US crochet terminology.
  • Blanket is worked back and forth in rows using mosaic crochet technique.
  • Pattern is multiple of 22 plus 2 stitches. To increase the width of the blanket, increase the number of chains. To decrease the width of the blanket, decrease the number of chains.
  • You can make this blanket as long as you like by adding or substracting pattern repeats.
  • ch1 in the beginning of each row doesn’t count as a stitch.
  • You can use yarn in different weights, but be aware that the width will be different depending on your gauge.
  • STITCHES: When in the instructions you have a stitch followed by a number, eg sc14, this means you have to work 1sc stitch into each of the next 14 sts. When in the instructions you have a number followed by a stitch, eg 2sc, this this means you have to work 2 sc stitches into the next (same) stitch.
  • Instructions in square brackets […] are worked as many times as indicated.
  • Instructions in square brackets *…* are worked as many times as indicated.

Mosaic Pattern Notes:

  • You can either follow the chart or written instructions.
  • Color is changed after every 2 rows. Change yarn in last stitch of row.
  • You can avoid weaving in all those ends by not cutting the yarn when you finish a row. Simply carry the other color along the inside and pick it back up with your hook when you need to use it again.
  • You are only working with one strand of yarn at a time – no carrying yarn across the rows.

How to read the Mosaic Chart:

  • Chart is read from bottom to top and each row of squares represents 2 rows worked in same color.
  • All odd rows on RS (1, 3, 5, etc.) are read from right to left.
  • All even rows on WS (2, 4, 6, etc.) are read from left to right.
  • Each square of the chart represents 1stitch or 1 skipped stitch.
  • Whenever you see a square of color dedicated to that row, work single crochet.
  • Whenever you see a square of different color in that row, skip that stitch (make chain). To prevent puckering,  make the same number of chain as the number of skipped sts plus ch1. For example, for 1 skipped st – make ch2, for 2 skipped sts – make ch3, for 3 skipped sts – make ch4, etc.
  • Pay special attention to number of skipped stitches when working on RS.
  • When working on WS make sure you work sc in every st without missing any.
  • On next odd row on RS (after color change), mosaicdc will be worked in these skipped sts from two rows below. Remember, mosaicdc are always worked in front of chains of previous rows.
  • IMPORTANT! Mosaicdc are always worked on RS. On WS just single crochet and chain stitches are used.

Stitches & Abbreviations (US terms):

ch(s) – chain(s) stitch

st(s) – stitch(es)

sc(s) – single crochet

dc(s) – double crochet

slst – slip stitch

yo – yarn over

mosaicdc (mosaic double crochet) – work regular dc in unworked/skipped st of the same color two rows below in front of chain space (in front of work). These chains will stay behind mosaicdc and will stay unworked.

sp – space

sk – skip

beg – beginning

prev – previous

RS – right ride

WS – wrong side

Fsc – foundation single crochet

Is there supposed to be a chart for this pattern? I don’t see it anywhere on this page. I love this style of mosaic crochet (and love this pattern), but sometimes find a chart to be very helpful.

I’ve never tried mosaic crochet before, but I think I can do this, as your instructions seem to be “spot on”. Thank you for a beautiful pattern!
