This crochet shawlette pattern started with one skein of lace weight yarn and a simple wish, to add something new to my lace shawl collection. What came off my hook is a little lacy shawl, about 47 inches wide, with picots along the whole edge.

Why I Added a Crochet Shawlette Pattern to My Lace Collection
Back then my lace shawls were big, like the Nightfall Shawl with its 80 rows. So this time I went small on purpose.
A shawlette has all the lace of a big shawl, but you can throw it on with a T-shirt and jeans. In my photos I wear it with the point at the front and the ends around my neck, like a scarf.
And it needs just one skein. If you have a special skein of lace yarn you’ve been too scared to cut into, this is its moment.
Lace Weight Yarn Is Worth It
A lot of crocheters run away from lace weight yarn, and I get why. It’s thin, it slips, and your stitches look tiny.
I find it really satisfying, though. There’s something special about watching such a thin thread slowly turn into real lace.
Then comes blocking, and the scrunched-up piece you take off the hook opens into a light, airy shawlette. If you’ve never tried lace weight, a small piece like this one is a friendly first step.
How This Crochet Shawlette Pattern Grows
This crochet shawlette is worked top down, back and forth in rows. You start with a magic ring (or 5 chains joined into a ring), and every row grows at both edges and around a ch-5 space in the center.
Rows 1 to 11 build the base, with solid blocks of double crochet and the first bits of lace. After that you repeat Rows 12 to 17 until Row 38, and the lace panels get wider with every repeat.
Want it bigger? Keep repeating Rows 12 to 17 a few more times, and just remember that a bigger shawlette needs more yarn.
Lace and Picots in the Crochet Shawlette Pattern
The lace in this crochet shawlette pattern is made of solid double crochet blocks and open ch-6 loops. As a mathematician, I’ve always been drawn to geometric shapes, and you can see that in the sharp triangles hiding inside this lace.
In the next row each loop gets a single crochet with a little picot in the middle. The edging takes three more rows, and the last one joins everything with linked single crochets and covers the bottom in picots.
Yarn for the Crochet Shawlette Pattern
For my shawlette I used one skein of Malabrigo Lace, and it’s still the yarn I recommend for this crochet shawlette pattern. It’s 100% baby merino with 470 yards (430 m) in 50 g, and you work it with a 2.5 mm hook.
My colorway is Whales Road, all navy and deep blue that shifts a little along every row. A variegated skein like this gives the lace depth without a single color change.
Since it’s merino, I wet block my shawlette. I soak it, pin it out on my mat and let it dry, and that’s when it finally looks like the photos.
Is This Crochet Shawlette Pattern Hard?
This crochet shawlette pattern is rated intermediate, and I won’t pretend it’s for total beginners. The rows are long and full of skipped stitches, so you need to count your chain spaces and double crochet blocks as you go.
The 6-row repeat comes back again and again, so after the second round of Rows 12 to 17 you’ll know which row is coming.

Materials & Tools:
- Yarn Malabrigo Lace 50 g = 430 m (470 yd), 100% baby merino wool, 1 skein. For the shawlette sample I used Whales Road colorway.
- Hook size 2.5 mm. Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.
- Tapestry needle (to weave and hide yarn ends).
- Scissors.

Size after blocking:
One size: Wingspan 120 cm (47.25”), center depth 57 cm (22.5”).
Gauge after blocking:
After Row 8: wingspan 23.5 cm (9.25”), center depth 11 cm (4.3”).
Gauge is not important for this project. However, changes might result in different yardage requirements and a different finished size.

Crochet Shawlette Pattern FAQ
Can I use fingering weight yarn for this crochet shawlette pattern?
Yes, but your shawlette will come out bigger, and you’ll need more yards and a bigger hook. Crochet the first 8 rows, block them and compare them with the gauge in the pattern.
What is a linked single crochet?
It’s one single crochet worked over two chain spaces at once, the ch-8 space two rows below and the ch-6 space one row below. It ties the edging together so the loops don’t flop around.
Why does my lace look scrunched up before blocking?
That’s completely normal with lace weight yarn. The chain loops and picots only open up and lie flat once you block your shawlette, so don’t judge it straight off the hook.
How do I keep track of the repeats in this crochet shawlette pattern?
Write down each row number as you finish it, or clip a stitch marker into the first row of every repeat. With six rows in each repeat, it’s easy to lose count without a little help.
