The Field of Flowers Shawl Is the Most Beautiful Way to Wear Lace

This flower shawl crochet pattern started with one picture in my head. A meadow full of flowers, but on a shawl.

A few weeks earlier I’d released my Forsythia Shawl, named after the yellow spring flowers. Nature was clearly on my mind. This time I wanted a whole meadow of flowers.

The working name was Green Meadow Shawl. That’s why the yarn is grass green. And that’s why you won’t find one big flower here, only lots of small ones side by side, like in a real meadow.

Each flower is made of holes in double crochet. There are no motifs to join and nothing to sew. The flowers appear row by row while the triangle grows from your neck down.

In the end, I called it Field of Flowers. Below you’ll see how the flowers grow, how hard the shawl really is and which yarn I used.

How the flowers grow in this shawl

Every flower in this shawl is made of empty space. Yes, really.

The fabric is mostly double crochet. Chain spaces leave holes in it, and the holes shape the petals.

A flower opens on Row 11 and closes on Row 16. Rows 17 to 19 add tiny holes between the flowers.

Then you repeat Rows 11 – 19, and a new line of flowers starts. The pattern does it three times, but you can keep going.

A top-down triangle that grows fast

Top-down shawls are sneaky. The first rows fly by, and suddenly you have a real triangle.

You start with a magic ring at the neck. A ch-5 corner sits in the middle of every row. Both halves mirror each other, so once one half makes sense, so does the other.

Every row starts with (ch6, dc) and ends with (dc, ch2, tr). That’s where the shawl grows on both edges.

The result is a big triangle that sits well on your shoulders. You can tie it around your neck in many ways.

How hard is this flower shawl crochet pattern?

Look at the photos and you might think “lace, no thanks”. Then look at the stitch list.

You need chains, single, double and treble crochet. The edge adds picots. That’s it.

It’s still an intermediate pattern. The rows get long and full of repeats, so you have to count.

My tip? Count your double crochet groups as you go. If you like to see the whole picture, the PDF has a stitch chart.

Yarn and blocking for this flower shawl crochet pattern

Solid yarn is your best friend here. A busy, multicolor yarn would hide every flower.

I used DROPS Nord in green. It’s a fingering weight blend of alpaca, wool and polyamide. You need about 1,006 yd, a bit under 6 skeins.

Alpaca and wool are animal fibers, so I wet block this shawl. I soak it, pin it out on a mat and let it dry. Blocking opens up every flower.

After blocking, mine is about 78.7 inches wide and 35.4 inches deep. Want a bigger meadow? Repeat the flower rows a few more times.

Materials & Tools

• Yarn: DROPS Nord (45% alpaca, 30% polyamide, 25% wool, 50 g/170 m/186 yd), approx. 920 m (1,006 yd), 6 skeins.
• Hook: 3.5 mm (US E/4). Adjust the hook size if needed to get the correct gauge.
• Tapestry needle (to weave in the yarn ends).
• Scissors.

Intermediate.

Size after blocking (adjustable)

Wingspan: approx. 200 cm / 78.7″. Center depth: approx. 90 cm / 35.4″.

Gauge after blocking

After Row 6, the triangle is approx. 10 cm / 4″ high.

Gauge is not important for this project. However, changes might result in different yardage and a different finished size.

• The pattern uses US crochet terms.
• The shawl is worked top-down in rows, back and forth.
• You can also use yarn in a different weight, but the size will change with your gauge.
• Stitches: a stitch followed by a number, e.g. dc4, means you work 1 dc into each of the next 4 sts. A number followed by a stitch, e.g. 2dc, means you work 2 dc into the next (same) stitch.
