Sarin, a Free Crochet Lace Shawl Pattern for Weddings

Lace has always been my weak spot, and this crochet lace shawl pattern is the proof! I’ve been fascinated by lace patterns for years, so I keep coming back to them with new designs. Sarin is one of them, a light triangle shawl in deep red with a big V of lace running down the middle.

It’s feminine, a little elegant, and it grows from just one tip. And it seems I’m not the only one who loves it, because Sarin has been saved over 4,000 times on Pinterest!

One reader even wrote that it’s perfect for a spring wedding. I love that idea, and I agree that it makes a lovely wedding shawl. So if you have a special day coming up, this could be your project.

How this lace triangle shawl is made

This lace triangle shawl starts at the very bottom, with a tiny point of just a few stitches, and grows up from there. You work in rows, back and forth, and turn at the end of every row. At both ends of each row, you add a few extra stitches, so every row is a little wider than the one before.

That’s how the triangle takes shape. The tip you started with becomes the point at the back, and your very last row becomes the long top edge.

Then comes the finishing touch, a border of 2 rounds of single crochet worked all the way around the shawl. The construction diagram in the pattern section shows the whole path, so you can see where you start, which way the rows go, and where the border begins and ends. And once it’s done, you can wrap your shawl around your neck or wear it loose over your shoulders.

How the lace in this shawl works

When I designed the lace for this shawl, I wanted it to look really special. So every row mixes open spaces with small solid fans, and row by row, those fans line up into diagonal lines. Keep going, and soon you’ll spot the big V in the middle of your shawl, and it keeps growing as you go.

After the first 15 rows, the pattern settles into a 12-row repeat, and you work Rows 16 to 27 again and again. Once you’ve worked it one time, each new repeat feels more familiar, because you already know what’s coming next.

To help you along the way, you place 2 stitch markers in the middle of your shawl in Row 15. Then you move them up in every row, so they always show you the center of the V, and you never lose your place.

Which yarn to use for your Sarin Shawl

For Sarin, I picked a very fine yarn, and it’s the reason this lace shawl weighs almost nothing. I used DROPS Lace, a lace weight yarn made of 70% alpaca and 30% silk. One skein has 437 yards, so 2 skeins are enough for the whole shawl, and together they weigh only about 3.5 ounces.

That’s why Sarin makes such a good summer crochet shawl. It’s light enough for warm days, and the alpaca and silk make it soft and drapey, so it falls in soft folds.

Don’t have lace weight yarn at home? You can also use fingering weight yarn. Just keep in mind that a thicker yarn makes a wider shawl, so your Sarin will turn out bigger than mine.

How to make your Sarin Shawl bigger or smaller

To make your Sarin Shawl bigger or smaller, you just work more or fewer repeats of Rows 16 to 27, and that’s the beauty of starting from the bottom. Because the shawl grows from the tip up, every repeat makes it wider and deeper. So you can stop whenever you like the size, as long as you finish a full repeat before you add the border.

My shawl is about 67 inches wide and 25.6 inches deep after blocking. For a smaller shawl, more like a scarf, stop earlier. And for a big wrap, keep going, but grab some extra yarn first.

How to block your lace shawl

To block your lace shawl, soak it in water, gently stretch it into a triangle and pin it to a blocking mat until it’s completely dry. That’s exactly what I do with my Sarin, because it’s made with alpaca and silk yarn.

With lace, this step makes a big difference. Straight off the hook, the holes and fans can look a bit crumpled. But once you stretch and pin the shawl, the lace opens up, and the V in the middle really shows.

Also, all the sizes in my pattern are measured after blocking. So if you skip it, your shawl will come out smaller than mine.

Gauge isn’t very important for this project, but a different gauge will change the amount of yarn you need and the finished size.

Edging

Crochet 2 rounds of single crochet around, working 3sc in each corner, 1sc in each dc, 1sc in each ch-1sp, 5sc in each ch-5sp and 4sc in each tr or ch4.

You can either turn your work after the first edging round or start the second round without turning.

Fasten off yarn, weave in all ends and block your shawl.
