Ready to keep your head warmer than your morning coffee?
The Winterberry chunky crochet hat pattern free is a quick, cozy project that’s perfect for everyone – whether you’re a new crocheter mastering basic stitches or a more experienced crocheter looking for a satisfying make.
This hat is made from the bottom up: start with a folded brim, crochet your way through a textured body, and shape it all into a perfect finish at the top of the beanie.
The back loop single crochet (BLsc) and crochet knit stitch (Ksc) give it a gorgeous, chunky yarn texture that looks way fancier than it is – this is an easy pattern, I promise.
All you need is bulky weight yarn, a 7 mm crochet hook, and maybe a snack (or three) to get started.
The pattern works in US terms and includes sizes for everyone – so you can make one for yourself, your bestie, or that friend who’s always cold but insists on being “fashionable.”
Oh, and if you’re into extra flair, adding a faux fur pom pom or yarn pompom at the top of your chunky crochet hat is a good idea – it’s like the cherry on top of your winter hat.
How to Crochet the Chunky Beanie Hat
This chunky crochet hat is worked in three parts: the brim, the body, and the crown. Think of it as building the coziest pyramid – one round at a time.
1. The Brim
The brim is where it all starts. It’s stretchy, warm, and keeps your ears from turning into popsicles. Begin with a foundation chain that fits your head circumference, then work single crochet stitches in the round.
To make the brim stand out, alternate two BLsc with three Ksc. This repeat row creates that ribbed, sweater-like texture that’ll have people asking, “Did you knit this?” (Feel free to say yes if you want; your secret is safe with me.)
When the brim is tall enough to cover your ears comfortably, fasten off the working yarn and flip it inside out. You’re officially one-third of the way to hat glory!
2. The Main Body
Here’s where things get fun! Reattach your working yarn on the opposite side of the foundation chain and continue the same BLsc and Ksc sequence.
The texture grows beautifully, and the bulky yarn makes it look like something straight out of a boutique. Plus, this part works up so fast that you’ll be saying, “Just one more round!” until the whole hat is done.
Want to experiment? Try different yarn weights or mix up yarn colors for stripes, ombré effects, or a bold pop of color. This pattern loves a little creativity!
3. The Crown
At the top of the Winterberry chunky crochet hat, you’ll shape the crown with a few decrease rows. The process is simple: reduce the number of stitches while keeping that gorgeous texture intact.
In the last row, you’ll weave the long tail of yarn through the remaining stitches with a tapestry needle and pull it tight.
A few quick finishing touches with a whip stitch, and voilà – you’re done! The crown is neat, tidy, and ready for compliments.
Make It Your Way
This chunky crochet hat pattern free is more than just a project – it’s a playground for your creativity. Here’s how to make it your own:
- Adjust the Size: Tweak the foundation chain or add/remove rounds for the perfect fit. Whether it’s for a tiny toddler or a friend with a big personality (and head), this pattern works.
- Try Different Yarn Weights: While lion brand wool-ease thick and other bulky yarns are ideal, experimenting with lighter or chunkier options is a good idea for a new look.
- Mix Up the Colors: Use bold stripes, subtle ombrés, or go wild with rainbows. Life’s too short for boring hats!
- Go Slouchy or Fitted: Add a few extra rounds to the body for a relaxed vibe, or keep it fitted for a classic chunky beanie hat style.
- Add Flair: While a faux fur pom pom is optional, it’s always a hit. Or skip it for a more minimal look – it’s your hat, your rules.
The possibilities are endless, and this pattern’s flexibility means every hat you make can be uniquely yours.
Plus, it’s a great project for stash-busting all those leftover yarns that are staring at you from your closet.
This chunky crochet hat pattern free is the perfect mix of cozy and stylish.
Whether you’re making it as a gift or just treating yourself (because self-care is important, right?), you’ll love how easy and satisfying this project is.

Chunky/bulky weight yarn in 1 color, approx. 135m.
Suggested Yarn: KOKONKI Marble 100g = 90m, 50% Wool, 10% Alpaca, 40% Acrylic.
- Hook size: 7mm. Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.
- Tapestry needle (to weave and hide yarn ends).
- Scissors.
Level:
Intermediate – working in the round, knit stitch (aka waistcoat stitch), single crochet working in the back loop, decreasing.
Sizes:
Toddler/Child(Teen/Adult Small, Adult/ Large)
The head circumference measurements that I used for each size are as follows:
Toddler/Child: 18″-21″ / 45.75cm-53.5cm
Teen / Adult Small: 22″-23″ / 55.75cm-58.5cm
Adult Large: 24″-25″ / 61cm-63.5cm
If your head measurement is in between the sizes above, I would suggest making the larger size.
Gauge after blocking:
7sts x 10rows in 4”/10cm in stitch pattern using 7mm crochet hook.
If your gauge is too tight, try a larger hook (e.g., 8 mm). If it’s too loose, go down a size (e.g., 6 mm)
Before you measure, block your swatch just like you’ll block your hat – it’s worth the effort for the perfect fit!
Size after blocking:
Brim circumference (unstretched): (18.25, 21.5, 24.5)”/ (46.5, 55, 62)cm,
Height from edge of hat when brim folded in half: 9.75”/25cm
