Boho Shawl Crochet Pattern That Actually Kept Me Hooked

I didn’t plan to design another shawl.
But, as always, one idea led to another… and suddenly I was sitting there with two yarn cakes and a hook, testing yet another ripple variation.

The ripple stitch pattern has always tempted me — it looks calm and rhythmic, but one wrong stitch and everything goes off track. I’ve started and frogged so many ripple projects that I could probably write a book about it.
This time, though, something just clicked.

I decided to work top-down in one piece, mixing double crochet, chain stitches, and a few single crochet back loop rows in that warm, rusty color. That tiny tweak changed everything. The texture popped, the color contrast worked perfectly, and I finally got that “yes, this is it” feeling.

The Story Behind My Boho Shawl Crochet Pattern

It all started, like too many of my ideas, with “just five minutes” on Pinterest.
I wasn’t even searching for inspiration. I just saw this photo — cozy tones of cream, rust, and gold — and thought, oh no, I’m gonna have to make that.

Lucky me, I already had two perfect strands of yarn waiting in my stash. Both came from Polish yarn festivals last year — two impulse buys that finally earned their place. That almost never happens, right? Usually, I fall in love with a color combo and realize I own everything except those shades.

This time it just worked. I did a quick gauge swatch, tested a few repeat rows, and the pattern basically wrote itself. No drama, no endless ripping back. Just one of those rare moments when yarn, color, and stitch pattern all play nice.

When I got to the bottom edge of shawl, I already knew how I’d finish it — picots, of course. I joke that I have a love-hate relationship with them.

They take forever, they make me grumble every few stitches… but then I block this beautiful shawl, step back, and instantly forget the pain. Those tiny dots do something no other edging can — they make a piece look truly finished.

Why You’ll Love This Boho Shawl Crochet Pattern

This project keeps you on your toes — but in a good way.
It’s not the kind you can crochet while half-watching a series, but it’s so satisfying when the rows start lining up just right.

  • You’ll use basic stitches — double crochet, single crochets, and chain stitches — but they really earn their keep here.
  • The single crochet back loop rows add texture and give this boho crochet shawl that bit of attitude I love.
  • The free pattern includes 66 rows, so there’s plenty to sink your hook into. If you want to go bigger, the PDF version has the extra notes.
  • The bottom edge of the shawl ends in neat picots — simple, timeless, and a little bit cheeky.
  • Great for using up leftover yards of yarn or testing color combinations you’ve been saving.
  • It’s light enough for everyday wear but still cozy on a chilly evening.
  • Add long fringe if you want full boho flair — or skip it if you like things cleaner.

Written in US terms and available as a free pattern or a large print PDF, this one is for anyone who enjoys a little challenge and that “I actually finished it — and it looks amazing” moment.

Grab your crochet hook, pour yourself something warm, and get ready to watch this boho shawl crochet pattern take shape — stitch by stitch, row by row, just the way we all like it.

Notes:

  1. The pattern uses US terminology.
  2. The shawl is worked top-down in one piece, back and forth in rows.
  3. When the pattern says “in last stitch”, it means to work your stitch (or stitches) in the 4th ch of the ch4 at the beginning of the previous row (for rows starting with ch4), or in the first single crochet of the previous row (for rows starting with ch1 and 2 single crochets in the first st).
  4. When the pattern says “BLdc” or “BLsc in ch space”, it means the stitch is worked in the back loop of the chain stitch.
  5. You can place a stitch marker in the top of the 4th ch (or in the first single crochet) at the beginning of each row to easily find the last stitch when you turn.
  6. You can use yarn in different weights, but the measurements will vary depending on your gauge.
  7. To achieve the best results, blocking is highly recommended. It will help open up the lace, define the edging, and give the shawl its beautiful finished look.
